The PlayStation Meeting is right around the corner and just like Sony’s previous press conferences, there is a lot of buzz as to what the company will be unveiling come 7 September 2016.
With the possibility of multiple console announcements in addition new game reveals this could be a press conference for the ages but what is the likelihood of all this gaming goodness occurring on just one night? Let’s break it down:
PS4 Slim ‘Reveal’: 99.9% Chance of Happening
With numerous PS4 Slims already in the wild it is all but certain that Sony will ‘reveal’ the PS4 Slim at the PlayStation Meeting. The more intriguing question is however how much will the revised system cost? Several gamers who already have their hands on the system have noted that the PS4 Slim lacks an optical port which implies that Sony have made the PS4 Slim as a cheaper alternative to the regular PS, therefore it is likely that the PS4 Slim will cost the same or less than the original PS4.
PS4 Neo Reveal: 95% Chance of Happening
In addition to the PS4 Slim, it is heavily rumoured that Sony will be showing off its big bad brother, the PS4 Neo. It is very likely that we will be seeing what the Neo looks like, how powerful it is, its price, what is it called and also when it will be released. Most reports claim that the system will only be slightly more powerful than the regular PS4 so expect Sony to show the likes of Uncharted 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn and more looking a little sharper on the new machine. Additionally we will probably be seeing a few 4K movies streamed to the system. With the PS4 Neo expected to be the most powerful console available to purchase today it is likely that the system will cost significantly more than the original PS4.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Reveal: 50% Chance of Happening
While Sony will show off many of their own first-party/third-party titles on the PS4/PS4 Neo/PS VR at the meeting, one title which has been on the minds of gamers since its E3 no-show is Red Dead Redemption 2. Seeing Days Gone for a second time at Sony’s E3 press conference back in June was very odd and it is alleged that Rockstar’s long-awaited third Red Dead title should have taken centre-stage instead. Is John Marston’s time now? If Red Dead was going to appear at Sony’s E3 conference then it is likely that Rockstar and Sony have a partnership of some degree over the title therefore it could be possible for Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster to be the knock-out punch at the PlayStation Meeting.
Crash Bandicoot Remastered Collection Hameplay: 30% Chance of Happening
Sony’s former mascot, Crash Bandicoot, is making his eagerly-awaited return to PlayStation consoles next year but it unlikely that we’ll see him at the PlayStation Meeting. The reason for this is that this is a remaster rather than a fully-fledged PS4 title made from the ground-up therefore, unless Activision have put as much love and affection into this remaster as Insomniac did with 2016’s Ratchet and Clank remake, it is unlikely that Sony will show off its shiny new machine with a title which may look a little dated.
PS Vita Trinity Announcement: 10% Chance of Happening
First it was Morpheus, then it was Neo and now it is Trinity; Sony’s affection for the Matrix series may have no end but its love for the handheld gaming space does. With a complete lack of first-party support on the PS Vita in addition to executives outright saying that the handheld marketplace is not a great location for dedicated handheld gaming devices at this time it is highly unlikely that the company would release a successor to the PS Vita, it would be awesome but it is unfortunately very unlikely.
